It is vital to respond to and treat the mental health crisis affecting our nation. Left untended, psychological distress affects the well-being of children, adults, families, and communities both because of the immediate impacts on individuals, as well as the long-term, intergenerational ramifications on families and communities, especially those experiencing marginalization.
- About half of women and a third of men have reported worsening mental health since the beginning of the pandemic with about a fifth saying the pandemic has had a major impact.
- 43.8 million adults experience mental illness in a given year
- The problem has been particularly acute for young adults, with about 50 percent reporting symptoms of depression.
- 37 percent of EMS first responders contemplated suicide and 6.6 percent attempted suicide, making them 10 times more likely than the CDC average.
- Women with children, Hispanic and Black people, the unemployed, and essential workers have been more likely to report mental health issues during the pandemic than the general population.
- According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), roughly 1 in 3 first responders develop PTSD.
- In their research titled, “Indicators of poor mental health and stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic, by disability status: A cross-sectional analysis,” Okoro, Strine, et al demonstrate that disabled adults experienced significantly higher rates of psychological distress related to the pandemic and its associated economic strains, and lack of access to vital medical and social supports. The disabled community continues to face surmounting mental health care barriers.
- According to Kneale and Bécares, LGBTQ+ young adults experienced increased depression and mental health distress during the pandemic, partially due to discrimination.

What We Can Do
Scaling Up is a trauma-informed, clinical education company dedicated to providing high-quality training programs for mental health providers. Our training programs equip clinicians with the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide culturally and contextually responsive care. It has a broad and diverse reach, ensuring that mental health care is accessible and affordable to clinicians and clients across various circumstances.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a World Health Organization-endorsed therapy for treating trauma and stress. It can be conducted in both individual and group formats, along with in-person or remote access.

Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) Procedures
The objective of the ASSYST Procedures is to guide the nervous system back into a state of presence and balance after an adverse experience. The ASSYST reduces one’s physiological distress with a quick and effective AIP-informed somatic approach. Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) Basic Training
The EMDR Basic Training teaches an evidence-based approach to mental health that demonstrates high degrees of effectiveness in treating a variety of diagnoses including, PTSD, anxiety, additions, eating disorders, chronic pain and more. Clients request EMDR Therapy because they are able to experience relief and an increased quality of life relatively quickly and more completely than with traditional talk therapy interventions.
