Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EMDR consultation and why do I need it?

EMDR consultation is a structured process in which an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant provides guidance, feedback, and clinical supervision to therapists who are learning or refining their EMDR skills. Consultation is a required component of EMDR Basic Training (10 hours) and EMDRIA Certification (20 hours). It helps therapists apply EMDR accurately and ethically with their clients.

What is an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant?

An EMDRIA-Approved Consultant is a licensed mental health professional who has met EMDRIA’s rigorous requirements for clinical experience, advanced EMDR training, and consultant preparation. They are authorized to provide the consultation hours that therapists need to complete EMDR Basic Training requirements and pursue EMDRIA Certification.

How many consultation hours do I need for EMDR Basic Training?

EMDR Basic Training requires 10 hours of consultation with an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant. Scaling Up’s EMDR Basic Training includes all 10 hours as part of the training package, structured across five 2-hour group consultation sessions scheduled between Parts I and II and following Part II.

How do I find an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant for my EMDR Basic Training or certification?

Scaling Up EMDR’s EMDR Basic Training includes built-in consultation groups led by EMDRIA-Approved Consultants. For additional consultation beyond the training, or for EMDRIA Certification consultation, you can browse Scaling Up’s consultant directory or use the consultant-matching quiz in the EMDR Certification Program.

Can I attend consultation groups with Scaling Up EMDR if I trained elsewhere?

Additional consultation beyond what is included in the EMDR Basic Training package may be available through Scaling Up’s consultant network. Contact the Scaling Up team for information on available consultation options and fees for therapists who completed Basic Training with another provider.
