EMDR Basic Training Parts I and II

EMDR Basic Training (Parts I and II)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an evidence-based treatment approach for a range of client presenting issues (particularly trauma-related). It incorporates somatic, emotional, cognitive, and narrative elements, and it facilitates accelerated reduction of clients’ symptoms due to adverse experiences.

EMDR Basic Training includes Part I and Part II, as well as 10 hours of consultation on EMDR Therapy, and reading an EMDR Therapy book by Francine Shapiro. This EMDR Basic Training is EMDRIA-Approved.

Clinicians are expected to begin using EMDR therapy with clients after completion of Part I and using group consultation to review these cases. The entire training must be completed within a 12-month period. Trainings include lecture, discussion, experiential exercises, demonstrations, and small group practice – all live, online or in-person! EMDR Basic Training is available to licensed mental health professionals or people working toward licensure and under the supervision of a licensed professional.

Training Overview:

The EMDR Basic Training Course includes both Part 1 and 2, as well as 10 consultation hours. It is an EMDRIA-Approved Training.

In this course, clinicians will learn how to conceptualize cases and conduct treatment plans from the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model. Clinicians will learn all 8 phases of EMDR therapy and how to conduct this therapeutic approach with clients experiencing anxiety, PTSD, depression, addictions, attachment-wounds and various other diagnoses and distressing symptoms.

Therapists will utilize the 3-pronged approach to reprocess clients past traumas, as well as present triggers and visualizing the ideal future for one’s self. Therapists will learn how to properly prepare client’s for the EMDR experience through resourcing and grounding techniques.

After this course, clinicians will be able to identify strategies to use with dissociative clients, various different cultural practices and awareness, along with working with clients with complex PTSD. This course takes an attachment-friendly and relational approach infused into the entire course. Lastly, clinicians will enhance their ability to conduct EMDR therapy with various populations, including adults, children, adolescents, immigrants and refugees, first responders, and more.

The training includes didactic learning, demonstration, live consultation and supervised online practicum.

EMDR BASIC TRAINING PART 1

Part I of the EMDR Basic Training covers the development of EMDR Therapy, the Adaptive Information Processing Model, the 8-Phase EMDR therapy approach, and Resource Development and Installation (RDI). Specific learning objectives include:

  • Identify how dual attention stimulation can activate the working memory theory to explain EMDR therapy’s mechanism of action
  • Name and describe the 8 phases of EMDR therapy
  • Determine how to access client readiness for EMDR trauma processing
  • Identify three options for Dual Attention Stimulus (DAS)

After Part I of the EMDR Basic Training, clinicians will begin using EMDR Therapy with clients and participate in consultation with one of Scaling Up’s highly experienced, EMDRIA-Approved Consultant or Consultant-in-Training facilitators. All consultations groups are pre-scheduled before the training begins. Please mark all these dates on your calendar. If a participant cannot attend one of the pre-scheduled consultation groups, they can join a consultation group with an approved Scaling Up facilitator outside of their cohort and pay the associated fee.

EMDR BASIC TRAINING PART 2

Part II of the EMDR Basic Training follows about 6-10 weeks later and addresses EMDR Therapy with Complex PTSD, Anxiety Disorders, Chronic Pain/Illness, Dissociation, and Children/Adolescents. Specific learning objectives include:

  • Identify 2 examples of grounding the client when they are experiencing dissociation
  • Describe strategies to use EMDR for clients with Complex PTSD
  • Explain modifications in using EMDR therapy with children
  • Apply the 3-pronged approach to prioritize targets for reprocessing

After Part II of the EMDR Basic Training, clinicians complete the remaining hours of the 10 required hours of consultation with a Scaling Up EMDRIA-Approved Consultant or Consultant-in-Training facilitator. The entire process of training from beginning Part I to finishing the 10 required hours of consultation must be completed within a 9-month period to qualify for the Certificate of Completion.

EMDR Basic Training (Parts I and II) includes lecture, discussion, experiential exercises, live demonstrations, and small group practice (as both therapist and client). Each dyad/triad will meet online or in-person in breakout rooms to practice the trauma protocol. They will be provided with an electronic copy of a comprehensive manual for Part I and Part II.

The entire EMDR Basic Training (Parts I and II) includes 20 hours of instruction, 20 hours of practicum, and 10 hours of consultation, at which point a certificate of completion (40 continuing education contact hours) is given to participants. EMDR Basic Training (Parts I and II) prepares clinicians to use EMDR Therapy with clients. However, this training does not result in EMDR Certification. This is a first step toward EMDR Certification (see www.emdria.org for information about EMDR Certification).

I really loved the training, I felt like it was so packed with knowledge but my learning never felt rushed, and the facilitators and instructor were all very knowledgeable and offered feedback in a great and supportive environment.

Although I was extremely nervous about practicing in groups, the support of the facilitators during the practices, and the awesome trainee’s patience with me as I was learning, made the experience a very positive one.

Very well planned and organized and the trainer and facilitators are all masters in EMDR. I really appreciate their responsiveness to participants’ questions and nuances of the practice with rich examples from their own.

This training was life changing as a therapist. I am SO very grateful to have had this experience. Thank you for being so warm and strengths based. I will be recommending this training to ALL of my therapist friends 🙂

The training was rigorous and intense. Today’s session really honed in the experience – and truly felt life changing, from a personal perspective (client) and as an in-training EMDR therapist.

Excellent organization. Kind, compassionate, passionate, and knowledgeable instructors! Wonderful and warm online environment.

We have found Scaling Up to be a wonderful company to work with. Eight of our employees have taken their trainings and we have found them responsive to our needs and easy to work with.

Stephanie Berliant - Better Life Therapy

We have engaged in many clinic wide trainings over the past 30 years and this was across the board and by far one of the highest quality and most useful trainings we have had. Scaling Up was professional, timely, well-informed and able to address issues that arose in real time to make sure that everyone involved was comfortable. As a non-profit organization, we never would have been able to afford this critical training without Scaling Up and are so grateful for their commitment to lower resourced populations.
